Alfons Franck was born in Sint-Pauwels, Belgium in 1933. He was schooled as a carpenter but became an engine mechanic during his military service. He started sculpting in wood as a means of relaxation. According to his son he would work several months on a sculpture. He often signed his work very prominently. Alfons Franck sculpted from his workshop in Waterland-Oudeman until his death in 2011.
