'Hofpostuurke' Antwerp Garden Statuette

A painted terracotta 'hofpostuurke' or garden statuette from Antwerp. 

Oftentimes these statuettes depict grotesque and humorous scenes such as the defecating farmer or professions like the glassblower and musician. Here we have a wandering man.

Statues like this one were exhibited at the 'Folklore-museum' in Antwerpen which opened its doors in 1907. (current collection MAS-museum)

Mid-19th century, in original condition, once held a cane. Found in the attic of a house in the centre of Antwerp.
