In the marl caves of Valkenburg are sculpted different fossilised reptiles, among which this Mosasaurus Plioplatecarpus by Jean Caelen. in 1896 master smith Jean Caelen sculpted the mososaurus plioplatecarpus in the Gemeentegrot cave in '3/4 true scale'.
Plioplatecarpus is a genus of mosasaur lizard. Like all mosasaurs, it lived in the late Cretaceous period, about 82-68 million years ago. It was first found in Europe by Belgian paleontologist Louis Dollo in 1882.
The 'Gemeentegrot' of Valkenburg is interesting from a historic-paleontological view and can be seen as the continental counterpart of London's 'Crystal Palace', where to this day Europe's oldest dinosaur reconstructions can be seen .
